South Branch Watershed Association (SBWA) held its 13th Annual Spring River Clean Up on Saturday, April 12th. Over 500 community members volunteered their time to clean up 20 sites throughout the watershed. Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Merck Corporation, 4-H, the ARC of Hunterdon County, Hunterdon Youth Services, National Honor Society of Hunterdon Central High School, local environmental commission members, and many concerned citizens and community groups participated in the clean up.
Over 9,000 lbs. of garbage was removed from local waterways to beautify and clean the river and surrounding land. Interesting items collected at various sites include a mattress and boxspring, a bedframe, a chest of drawers, car bumpers and fenders, a picnic table, a bicycle, and over 100 tires! For many of the participants, it was a small way to make a big difference in the communities in which they live, work, and play.
Local sponsors helped to make the event possible. Of special note are Merck for their generous Champions for the Environment Award; Raritan Valley Disposal for their open handed help in collecting the garbage from all 20 sites; and Colalillo Shop-Rite for providing morning snacks for all participants. The event was a great success because of the help of hundreds of volunteers and sponsors! For more information, contact Maria DuBois, SBWA at (908) 782-0422 or at mariadubois@netcarrier.com.
