What do 700 awesome volunteers, large bright orange bags, and litter have in common? Clean streams when you put them all together! Thanks to these 700 volunteers, the South Branch Watershed Association’s 19th Annual Stream Clean-Up that was held on Saturday, April 18th, was a tremendous success!
Participants included many concerned individuals and community groups such as Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Somerset 4-H, Round Valley Trout Association, Hunterdon Youth Services, MADE, Timberland, American Water, Hunterdon Sierra Club, Flemington Assemblies of God Church, Ken Lockwood Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Or Chadash Temple, MetLife, Morris County College, Raritan Valley Community College, Immaculate Conception School, Anderson House, and several local Environmental Commissions.
Over 4 tons of trash was removed from our local streams and surrounding land. Interesting items collected at our 21 sites included a hubcap, inner tube, hair spray, tennis ball, electric meter, mailbox, traffic cone, milk crate, watering can, basket ball, box spring, underwear, snow shovel, iron ingots, metal pipes, metal buckets, part of a car engine, political sign, headlights, frisbee, ceiling fan with light, tarp, shoes, roofing shingles, and a golf ball.
Local sponsors also helped to make this event possible. Shop Rite of Flemington and Clinton provided refreshments, Hunterdon County Utilities Authority provided funding, bags, and gloves, Team Graphics provided the t-shirt design, Special T’s donated the t-shirt set up fees, Raritan Valley Disposal removed the collected trash, Wal-mart of Clinton provided first aid kits, and 14 local municipalities provided additional funding support.
This event was a great success due to the support and participation of our many sponsors and volunteers!
